in the panhandle of west virginia up into pennsylvania, some scattered showers across west virginia and into the ohio valley. that area of low pressure is going to be coming down our way later on today, and before that we may see a little sun this morning. but overall, a cloudy day, some showers by midday and then perhaps some afternoon thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. could produce some hail and damaging winds. that would be from about 3:00 orr 4:00 in the afternoon all the way through perhaps early evening this evening. highs reaching near 70 before then. things should settle down by late this evening and by dawn tomorrow maybe lingering light showers. after that we ought to get sunshine back by tomorrow afternoon with highs in the mid 60s. then the weather does settle down considerably midweek. we veal the shine back on wednesday. should be partly cloudy. morning lows near 40. afternoon highs into the mid 60s. then lots of sunshine for thursday with highs near 70. let's check traffic on this monday morning. jerry, how is it look sng. >> good morning to you. good mornin

in west virginia where today we could get more news as the rescue attempts start up again this morning. hi, john. >> reporter: good morning, kiran. it looks like they are a little ways away from the signing ceremony. >> we are expecting a press conference in the next 20 minutes here at the marsh fork element stare school. if things went as scheduled, four teams of eight rescuers should be in the mile a little more than an hour and a half. they have to get down five miles to where the miners are believed to be trapped. they have spent the last 18, almost 24 hours clearing the mine of toxic levels of methane. they have it down to a level where it is nonexplosive but not nondangerous. they hope to have some word if things can progreg and they don't run into unforeseen circumstances in the mine probably somewhere in the next couple of hours or so, we may know the fate of those four miners. it is such a tragedy that happened on monday afternoon, 25 lives taken. three of the lives were from the same family. last night, after a prayer vigil in a nearby town, i sat down with the mother, the aunt a

through the upper big branch coal mine in west virginia, searching for four missing miners since a blast killed 25 colleagues on monday, the worst mining disaster we've seen in this country in a generation. rescuers were waiting to enter the mine until four venation shafts were drilled, that would release the dangerous methane gas and carbon monoxide. -- too unsafe to go inside at that point, but now it's better. the community is devastated, mining is their lifeblood. the family and friends in that town, holding out hope for the missing and grieving, meanwhile, for the 25 confirmed dead. >> we knew them all, grew up with the young ones, many of the older ones. great bunch of people, kids. it's just a shame something like this has to happen. >> i want everybody to know, he was a good guy, he was the best dad in the world. >> we had an -- we had an 18-year-old cousin in there, and it was a shift change and he got out, but we did know three others that died. west virginians are strong and resilient people, and in times of tragedy and in times of need, we pull together to give and to be here

rescuers and crews in west virginia are venting deadly gases to rescue operations are get under way for the four minors still missing from the worst u.s. mining disaster in a quarter century. 25 miners died in monday's explosion. massey energy has a wide history of safety violations. for more on this story we turn to msnbc's norah o'donnell live with the story. norah? >> reporter: good morning. today is the day we may learn the fate of those four missing miners. the governor of this state said yesterday that we may know between 12:00 and 2:00 today whether those four bore holes they are drilling more than 1,000 feet in the ground to try to ventilate some of that methane gas and carbon monoxide out, whether that's been successful. it will take the rescue teams, once they determine it's safe, four to five hours to reach an area 20 feet wide and barely tall enough to stand in, that's where they believe with 90% certainty these four miners are trapped. they are hopeful, of course, for a miracle, hoping they are alive. as the governor said yesterday, the odds are long. we heard yesterday

60 there and western maryland, eastern shore now, the low 60s, low 60s across southern virginia and into the carolinas. now, as we take a look at the view from space over the last 24 hours, we have seen the storm system cranking up here in the central part of the rockies and out ahead of that we may get some severe weather. this is a large storm system that's going to be advancing to the east, and it'll be sort of tracking right on top of us and then stall out here for the weekend and into the first part of next week. as that happens, it will give us some rain. it appears for saturday and sunday and into the first part of next week. well, let's take a look at the closer view. we have seen this storm system we had with the rain yesterday exiting off to the east. and as we go forward now, the futurecast over the next 12 to 24 hours shows just a few clouds around this afternoon as we get a weak front coming through. during the day on friday, a few clouds and here comes some rain from that storm system in the midwest. that will likely be arriving during the day on saturday. for the

explosion in a west virginia coal mine. officials say levels of gases have dropped enough to resume the seven now but they have acknowledged it is unlikely the four missing men are still alive. nbc's brian mooar joins us from naoma, west virginia, with the latest. how are those rescue efforts going? >> well, savannah, they're proceeding at least today. these rescue workers went in a little after midnight and supposedly been making some progress. we'll get an update in half appear hour, what they found at this point. yesterday was a day of disappointment when they got within 500 feet of place they believe these missing miners might have bunkered down if they were able to survive this blast, that's considered unlikely, and time is running out today, because if they were in that shelter area, oxygen would be running out. meanwhile, nbc news has learned this upper big branch mine has been cited a startling number of times in the last decade. this information hasn't been made public yet but has been provided to lawmakers who are learning this mine was cited 61 times in the past 15 months
